DIY Backless Ruffle Top

DIY Backless Ruffle Top

I have been seeing this top everywhere. Originally by Trois, the Ruby top is described as a summer must have. It’s perfectly strappy, ruffled, and backless, but it’s also $85. Luckily, if you have some basic sewing supplies, an hour of free time, and a bit of scrap fabric, you can make it for virtually nothing. Here’s how.

Tools:

  • Fabric (preferably one that doesn’t have any stretch to it)

  • Matching thread

  • Pins

  • Scissors

  • Measuring tape

  • Paper

  • Pencil

  • Sewing machine

Width: Measure your upper bust and your full bust from armpit to armpit. Add 1 inch to both measurements for seam allowance.

Length: Measure from your upper bust to where you want the top to finish. Add 1 inch for seam allowance.

Strap: Measure a strip 1 inch wide and at least 150 inches long.

cut fabric

cut fabric

Using your pattern, cut two panels and a long strap. If your fabric isn’t long enough for a single strap, you can connect multiple to get the full length.

sew bodice

With the two bodice panels facing right sides together, pin along all four edges. Making sure to leave a 2 inch opening on one side, sew with a ½ inch seam allowance.

flip

flip right side out, iron & topstitch

Through the gap you’ve left open, flip the bodice right side out and use a pencil to push the corners out. Iron the garment flat then topstitch the gap closed.

strap

Fold your fabric strip right sides together and sew down the entire length. Then, using a loop turner or this cool needle and thread hack, flip it right side out.

casing

topstitch strap casing

Measuring two inches from the top, draw two parallel lines ½ an inch apart. Repeat two inches from the bottom. Topstitch along these lines.

feed your straps through

To feed your straps through the casing, first seam rip the few stitches on the side seams that block the casing from opening. Then using a safety pin, slide the strap through the top casing.

Taking one end of the strap, feed it through the bottom casing. Once through, switch the safety pin to the other end of the strap and feed it through the bottom casing going in the opposite direction (it sounds kinda complicated but I promise it’s as easy as it looks).
